The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is likely to start construction on the Metro extension line from Noida City Centre to Sector 62 in January.

The Noida Authority on Monday released ` 247 crore to the DMRC for this 6.8-km link. It had signed a memorandum of understanding for the project with the Metro agency last month. Officials said the work should be completed in two years.

“The agency will float tenders for this ` 1,805-crore project soon so that construction work can begin as soon as possible. We have paid the first instalment of our contribution. Now the DMRC is supposed to complete all formalities and begin work within the stipulated time,” said Pramod Kumar Agarwal, additional chief executive officer (ACEO), Noida Authority.

The Centre will fund almost 20% of the project cost and the rest will be borne by the Noida Authority.

“We do not have any issues with managing funds for any Metro project being undertaken in Noida. Today, we have released the first instalment of ` 247 crore. We will release the remaining money as and when DMRC demands it,” said another official from the Noida Authority.

“If this Metro link starts by 2017, then it will help office-goers a lot. Sectors 61, 62, 57, 58, 59, 60 and 64 house many multi-national companies, educational institutions, BPOs and other offices,” said Amardeep Kaushik, a college student.
