The crime branch has caught a couple who cheated people on pretext of selling them their property which was mortgaged to the bank. They also sought loans from multiple banks by forging papers and mortgaging the same property again and again. Mahipal Singh (40) and Ruchi (33) are residents of Paschim Vihar in west Delhi, police said.

Additional commissioner of police Ashok Chand said that head constable Ajay Kumar had received information about a man and a woman involved in several cases of cheating that had come to light in Model Town area. “A team led by DCP M A Rizvi and ACP Sukhvinder Singh laid a trap and nabbed the duo on a tip-off,” Chand added. The two had been declared proclaimed offenders by court and rewards of Rs 20,000 had been declared for the duo.

The husband-and-wife pair was subjected to intensive interrogation. It was discovered that the couple first purchased properties and then obtained loans against them from banks after mortgaging them. They prepared multiple sets of documents for one property and then submitted forged documents to several banks who were negligent enough to provide them loans.

They then ‘sold’ these properties to unsuspecting buyers without informing them that they had procured loan from various banks against these properties. “All these properties are located in Paschim Vihar. They have cheated buyers to the tune of Rs 4 crore. Local police have been informed about their arrests,” Chand said. Police are now looking for a third associate who is absconding.
