A group of Sector 54 residents have decided to file a public interest litigation (PIL) in the high court against neighbours involved in unauthorized construction.
Illegal constructions are rampant in the area which has EWS (Economically Weaker Section) colonies and independent houses. As per law, EWS houses can only be built up to two-and-a-half floors. However, over 90% of such houses in the area have a third or fourth floor.
“EWS houses can’t bear the load of an extra floor, which, on weak foundations is a safety hazard,” said Harish, one of the petitioners.
Most of the illegal construction in Sector 54 is in Suncity. Its representative Harender Singh said, “It is DTCP’s responsibility to take action against defaulters. The developer can’t do much.”
District town planner (enforcement) Kalyan Singh disagreed. “Illegal construction can easily be checked by banning entry of vehicles carrying construction material, that developers can easily do. But they have never shown much interest to our suggestion,” he said.
