The government will likely introduce amendments to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) 1986 in the current winter session of Parliament, food and consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Monday. “We are bringing in several amendments to the existing Act. I am optimistic we will be able to introduce them in this session,” he told reporters.
Some key amendments to the CPA are establishment of a regulatory authority to address consumer grievances, penal action against defaulting companies and empowering consumers to file case against sellers from their place of residence instead of place of transaction. The amended Act may also cover e-commerce companies and other service providers like railways and courier firms.
After stakeholders submit their inputs, the amendments will be finalised and placed before the Cabinet for approval, Paswan said.
