The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is set to finalise and announce a plan of action against the Narendra Modi government on Tuesday against dilution in the land acquisition Act and “attempts to water down” MGNREGA, two of UPA government’s showpiece legislation.
Sources said former commerce minister Anand Sharma and members of the sub-group on rural development have been asked to attend the meeting. While K V Thomas heads the group, former rural development minister Jairam Ramesh is a member. The Congress believes that the BJP government has changed the “heart and soul” of the land Act.
The sources said Sharma, Thomas and Ramesh have submitted a report to the Congress president underscoring that the government has made substantial dilution in the Act. Tuesday’s will be the second CWC meeting on the subject. The party could announce a nationwide agitation as the leadership wants to utilise the issues to reach out to the farmers and the rural poor.
Ramesh and former MoS Pradeep Jain Aditya will also address a gathering in Bhatta-Parsaul on January 14.
The Congress hopes to take the agitation route to energise its rank and file and set right the perception that the party is drifting with no clear direction coming from the top. The CWC resolution will also set the tone for the Budget Session of Parliament during which the government would want to replace the ordinance on land acquisition with a law.
